Austria Highest Peaks

Grossglockner / Großglockner
A 3,798 m above sea level, Austria's highest mountain and the highest mountain in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass. This makes it, after Mont Blanc, the second most prominent mountain in the Alps, when measured by relative height; see the list of Alpine peaks by prominence. The characteristically pyramid-shaped peak actually consists of two pinnacles, the Großglockner and the Kleinglockner, separated by a saddle-like formation known as the Glocknerscharte.

Wildspitze
The highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and the second highest mountain in Austria. The large number of glaciers and relatively easy routes make it popular with ice climbers. The first ascent of the southern peak was accomplished in 1848 by Leander Klotz and an unknown farmer of the region. The even higher northern peak was also first climbed by Leander Klotz. The lookout from the peak is only limited by the curvature of the earth. To the east one can see as far as the Schobergruppe and the Bernese Alps to the west.

Weißkugel / Palla Bianca in Italian
The second highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and the third highest mountain in Austria. It lies on the border between Austria and Italy. It features many glaciers. The easiest way to climb it is over the south side of it. It was first climbed in 1850 by J.A. Specht, Leander Klotz, and Nicodem Klotz.

Großvenediger
Generally considered to be Austria's fourth highest mountain. It is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park on the border of Salzburg and East Tyrol, and is covered by glaciers. The name "Großvenediger" (big Venetian) is first recorded from a border survey in 1797. The origin is unclear, but is supposed to derive from Italian merchants who came from Venice in the south over the mountains. An alternative theory is that the view from the summit may reach as far as Venice, some 200 km away.

Similaun
A mountain in the Ötztal Alps. It is on the Austrian-Italian border. At 3,607 m high, it is Austria's sixth highest summit. It was first ascended in 1834 by Josef Raffeiner and Theodor Kaserer. It is most famous for being the mountain on whose slopes Helmut Simon and Erika Simon discovered Ötzi the Iceman in 1991.

Grosses Wiesbachhorn
/ Großes Wiesbachhorn
The Großes Wiesbachhorn (3,564 m) is a mountain in Salzburg, Austria and is the third-highest peak of the Hohe Tauern range.
